Youth Trout tourney is Saturday

BY SHARON BARDONNER - sbardonner@ftimes.com

As of Monday afternoon the weather.com forecast for Saturday looked positive for the contestants baiting their lines for the Frankfort Parks Department’s first Youth Trout Tournament.

The fishing contest will begin at 9 a.m., rain or shine, said Frankfort Parks Superintendent Travis Sheets. The event will be cancelled in the case of a severe weather event, however.

The catch-and-release contest lets kids compete for prizes and bragging rights in four categories, according to a news release provided by the department.

Heats for category A (up to six years old) will begin at 9 a.m.; category B (7-12 years old) will begin at 9:45 a.m.; category C (fly casting open to anyone up to 16 years old) will begin at 10:30 a.m.; and category D (13-16 years old) will begin at 11:15 a.m. Each heat is 30 minutes long, and contestants furnish their own fishing poles and bait.

The contest is more about kids forging relationships with other kids and caring adults, Sheets said.

Every participant regardless of their age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Adults can assist but not participate in the actual fishing. Every catch will be measured and registered by a tournament volunteer, with the fish released afterwards.

“We designed this day to be about attendees spending time together while enjoying a fun activity, goals our Parks Department works hard to achieve for park visitors every day,” said Sheets.

The following Saturday, March 24, the Parks Department again will host fishing in TPA Park, but this time it will be a public event open to anyone. Fishing will be open from 7-9 a.m.

Those who catch fish can keep them for a small fee, according to Sheets, explaining that the trout won’t fare well in warm weather.

“The trout will not survive an Indiana summer since they are a coldwater fish,” Sheets said.
