The Hot Dogs earned an 11-4 win over the Carroll Cougars in Friday’s non-conference varsity baseball game at Frankfort.

It was the Hot Dogs’ third win of the week after defeating Danville on Tuesday and Thursday.

“The goals were a little better every time we come out,” Frankfort head coach Andy Dudley said. “We don’t repeat mistakes, and we learn from things. I am happy with where we are.

“After a really competitive conference week and a couple tough ones on Thursday and Friday last week, we got a non-conference Frankfort night where we got to pitch a couple of guys who hadn’t got inning and play a couple guys,” he added. “(The Cougars) were shorthanded tonight, so it was kind of a sloppy game. But we took care of business and that is the important part.”

Ahead 2-0, the Hot Dogs got a single from Roger Angeles to start the bottom of the fourth inning followed by a double from Casey Henry before a pair of passed balls, a wild pitch and a single off the bat of Jack Espinoza helped Frankfort break the game open with a 6-0 lead.

When Carroll answered with its first two runs of the game, the Hot Dogs answered with five more runs in the bottom of the fifth with the help of seven walks issued by the Cougars in that frame.

With an 11-2 lead and just a run short of ending the game in five innings, the Hot Dogs were able to get more players into the game before leaving with the 11-4 victory.

“It was not like we were emptying the bench,” Dudley said. “We have guys who are all contributing. Our pitching staff is really deep. We have a tournament tomorrow, so Compton did a good job of going deep into the game and giving us a fourth or fifth starter.”

Sophomore Braden Compton got the start for Frankfort and struck out seven batters while walking two and allowing three hits and two runs in the first 4 1/3 innings before solid work by relievers Jesus Lopez, Benito Lopez and Jack Espinoza finished the game for the Hot Dogs.

“Braden threw well. I was happy with what Braden did,” Dudley said. “I think that we need to get refocused a little bit. We should have finished that game off a couple times. It is tough. They were a lot different than the pitching we had seen all week, and I don’t think we made adjustments. So, I think that is something we need to talk about – how to make adjustments to what is on the mound.”

Henry batted 2-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored for the Hot Dogs while Espinoza went 2-4 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored, Roger Angeles went 2-4 with two runs, Luis Hernandez went 1-2 with an RBI and two runs scored, and Jose Valdes-Sandoval added two runs.

The Hot Dogs followed the win over Carroll with a late addition to their schedule – a four-team tournament Saturday at Crawfordsville High school.

“I think it is a really good pickup for us,” Dudley said. “There are three other really good teams. We play Franklin Central in the second game of the tournament. If we win, we play the winner of Crawfordsville and Central Catholic. So, there is some pretty good competition in a tournament format that we don’t get to see during the year much.”
