Guijosa ready to represent Frankfort at girls' state finals

Frankfort senior Noemi Guijosa is spending the week preparing for the IHSGW State Finals after taking third place in the 170-pound weight class at Friday’s regional tournament at Bunker Hill.

State Finals T-shirts supporting Guijosa have been for sale at the school, and her coaching staff and teammates are excited about her upcoming trip to Lawrence North High School for the State Finals on Friday night in Indianapolis.

“Everyone is very excited about Noemi’s success,” Frankfort head coach Richard Sallee said. “She has worked hard as a student-athlete, which has been a large part to her success in wrestling. This is her first year on the team, and Friday was her first live action in competitions. With an early-season shoulder injury, she has not had much more than three weeks of mat time ever. She has worked hard in her conditioning and studies film. Her only regret when it comes to wrestling is waiting until her senior year.”

Guijosa follows in the footsteps of teammate Skylar Seward, who wrestled in the first girls’ regional tournament last year but was not able to advance to the State Finals.

“Skyelar Seward was our pioneer for girls wrestling,” Sallee said. “She was our first girl to wrestle in the girls’ tournament last year. Her love for the sport and courage to do what others haven’t may be one of the things that got Noemi in our program. We are very lucky to have both of these outstanding lady and hope that girls wrestling continues to grow.”

Guijosa’s first-round opponent in Friday’s State Finals will be Blackford’s Tori Blacker. With a win, Guijosa would advance to a semifinal match versus Maconaquah’s Mary Meyers for a spot in the state championship match.
