Gophers at .500 after wins over Blackhawks and Titans

The Clinton Prairie wrestling team earned a 38-36 win over the Blackhawks and a 54-12 win over the Taylor Titans on Wednesday at Sheridan. The wins came one day after the Gophers lost to the Eastern Comets.

“We wrestled well Wednesday night,” Clinton Prairie head coach Joey Mitchell said. “Tuesday I would of liked to have seen a much better performance. However, we are a young team with only one varsity senior on the squad, and we will only get better from our experiences this year.”

By going 2-1 versus Hoosier Heartland Conference opponents this week, the Gophers’ record now stands at 11-11 overall and 3-3 in the HHC with a match versus Tri-Central remaining this weekend.

“After Saturday, the regular season will be over for us and our focus will be on the conference and state tournament,” Mitchell said. “This has been a somewhat difficult year. We lost four seniors last year which left us very young and Inexperienced. However, seasons like this are what makes a team stronger, and I look for us to finish the season strong Saturday and finish with an above .500 record as a team.

“We have wrestled some tough completion this year, from all our county schools to Lafayette Jeff, Culver Academies, Delphi, West Central, Triton, Harrison, Benton Central, Eastern and the list goes on. Despite the stiff competition, this team has come together to put some pretty impressive wins together.”

Clinton Prairie 113-pound freshman Jared Ray and sophomore 195-pounder Jaime Escareno are each 3-0 this week for the Gophers.

“They are firing on all cylinders and have really picked up their pace,” Mitchell said. “They are two very young kids who are turning into very good wrestlers.”

Meanwhile, Christian Matias (120), Sam Gonzalez (160) and Brant Joseph (285) each went 2-1 this week, and Rayce Russell (170) went 2-0.

“I’m proud of these kids and look forward to finishing the season very strong and going into the conference tourney with some momentum,” Mitchell said.
